Coronation 60th Anniversary

Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged the setting of the hymn All people that on earth do dwell for the 1953 coronation (the first occasion on which a congregational hymn had been sung at a coronation).

The opening flourish is adapted from the composer's Cantata The Hundredth Psalm. The harmonization of verse 2 is taken from Songs of Praise. The Faux-bourdon, (English faburden, 'false drone' or 'false bass' technique of musical harmonisation where the melody is in a lower voice, in this case tenor voice, was used in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, particularly by composers of the Burgundian School, to allow liturgical lyrics to be understood clearly), in verse 4 is by John Downland (1621).

The orchestration and fanfare are to celebrate Elizabeth, whereas we are celebrating God. So our accompaniment will more feature the beautiful vocal harmony arrangement.

Ralph Vaughan Williams arr. - All People That On Earth Do Dwell

The National Service of Thanksgiving to Celebrate The Diamond Jubilee Of Her MajestyThe Queen

St Paul's Cathedral, Tuesday 5th June 2012

The ashes of Ralph Vaughan Williams, eminent British composer, and his second wife Ursula are buried in the north choir aisle of Westminster Abbey, near the graves of Herbert Howells and Charles Villiers Stanford. All the music played at his burial service was selected according to his known wish. He composed a new anthem for the unveiling of the Battle of Britain memorial chapel in the Abbey in 1947 and arranged the setting of the hymn All people that on earth do dwell for the 1953 coronation (the first occasion on which a congregational hymn had been sung at a coronation). The slate gravestone was originally cut by sculptor Reynolds Stone but in 1965 it was re-cut and filled with white marble for better preservation. The inscription reads: 1872 RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Here are some different arrangements of this traditional African American spiritual. We can include some of these features as we develop. For now we are starting with a simple a cappella arrangement that we can learn and perform quickly.
