Ave verum corpus

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

K 618, Baden, June 17, 1791

Ave Verum Corpus is one of Mozart's most famous, and most popular works. It was written to celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi (which was of particular importance in Mozart's native Austria at the time). Ave Verum was first performed at the parish church in Baden, Austria on Corpus Christi day in 1791 (Mozart gave it as a gift to the local choirmaster, Anton Stoll, with whom he became friends while Mozart's wife was staying at a nearby spa during her sixth pregnancy). Mozart's autograph on the original manuscript is dated 17th June 1791 - less than six months before his death on December 5th. The verse itself is from a 14th century handwritten document from Reichenau, an island in Lake Constance in southern Germany, penned by an unknown author. Mozart's original manuscript lacks any specific interpretive or dynamic instructions other than the words "Sotto voce" at the beginning of the score.

Ave, verum corpus
natum de Maria Virgine,
Vere passum immolatum
in Cruce pro homine,
Cujus latus perforatum
unda fluxit et sanguine,
Esto nobis praegustatum
in mortis examine.
Hail, true body
born of the Virgin Mary,
Who truly suffered, sacrificed
on the Cross for man,
Whose pierced side overflowed
with water and blood,
Be for us a foretaste*
In the test of death.

*The sacrament of the eucharist was often referred to as being a "foretaste of heaven".

There Is A Balm In Gilead

Here are some different arrangements of this traditional African American spiritual. We can include some of these features as we develop. For now we are starting with a simple a cappella arrangement that we can learn and perform quickly.
